How long has this business been here? My grandfather and great-grandfather started a brickworks here 77 years ago. After a while they started supplying cement, dampcourse, ties etc with the bricks. We got into hardware and timber properly in the early 80s. But we still make the bricks.

And how long have you been here?
I left school at 16 and I’ve been here ever since. That’s over 40 years ago now.

You were amongst the first stores to join HBT back at the start in 1997 – why?
We were very unhappy with the group we were in at the time. Because of the catalogues we were constantly required to buy products that weren’t relevant for our customers. It doesn’t work when someone sitting in an office 600 kilometres away is telling you what to buy. With HBT we buy what sells in our area at the prices we need to pay. With HBT you can’t go wrong.

Any other comment?
In HBT you get to talk to hands on people who own or work in other stores. At the meetings you realise that we all have the same problems and issues. It helps to share that stuff.
