How long have you been involved with your business?
Dad opened the timber yard in 1971 – basically he introduced pine from the Tumut region to the South Coast. We all joined the business as we left school in the early 70’s.

We understand that life was pretty basic back then?
It was. Our ‘bedrooms’ were built on top of the timber rack and we slept on site for the first few years. We took over running the place about 23 years ago and branched into hardware about 14 years back.

You were a founding member of HBT in 1996. Why?
The original idea was that each (member) store had it’s area of expertise and we’d all ride on the coat-tails of whichever store had the best deal with a particular supplier. We knew there was a better way to purchase than just doing everything by ourselves.

Your area has boomed in the last five years?
It  has, like most places on the coast – our business has doubled in size and of course we’ve had to invest more back into it.

What’s the biggest plus you’ve had out of HBT?
The strength of purchasing has made us competitive with the bigger players.
